Hat-trick for golfers

Bay of Plenty golfers made it a hat-trick of victories at the Steve Williams New Zealand Mixed Age Group Classic at the weekend.

Held at the Inglewood and Stratford Golf Clubs, the event hosted a range of 50 competitors from under-13 to under-25 including four Bay of Plenty golfers.

Liam McFarlane recieves the award for under-13 category in the Steve Williams New Zealand Mixed Age Group Classic.

Mount Maunganui golfers Hayden Beard, 19, and Bailey Smith, 16, along with Omanu golfer Liam McFarlane, 11, returned with silverware after taking out three of the five age groups at the three day competition.

Hayden won the overall tournament after taking out the under-25 division, while Bailey won the under-17 division and Liam the under-13 division.

Liam also finished second in both the under-13 gross division and the overall men's under-25 section, losing by one point.

The boys played 18 holes on Friday, 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday.

Liam, who plays off a 26 handicap, says it was quite good to win his division and he would be back next year to try and take out the overall title.

'I need to practice my chipping. I normally practice after school three days a week.”

Omanu Golf Club manager Barry Plank says Liam's achievements were great after being involved with the sport from a young age.

'His grandparents took him round the golf course frequently. He just loves it. He's a good young kid with good etiquette. '

Barry was pleased to see golfers such as Liam come to the sport with a good attitude.

'It's good to see them come through. It's a great grounding in life.”
