Coastland dominates opening day

The two Bay of Plenty teams had contrasting fortunes on the opening day of the Northern Districts Secondary cricket tournament in Gisborne.

BOP Coastland won both their T20 contests, with BOP Lakeland tasting defeat to Hamilton and Counties Manukau.

Waikato Valley Plains batted first against BOP Coastland and mustered 104/4 in their 20 overs.

However, the Bay team were made to work for victory losing six wickets on the way. Ben Musgrave (27) and Julian Bradley (20) led the way with the bat for the Coastland side.

BOP Lakeland got away to a grand start against Hamilton, with the opening batsmen of Jonty Keaney (35) and Michael Hargreaves (24) putting together a 69 run opening partnership.

The Hamilton bowlers struck back to restrict the Lakeland team to 112/9. The Waikato team then went on to post a seven wicket win.

For the second time in the day, BOP Coastland fielded first, in the afternoon T20 clash with Poverty Bay.

Henry Conway led the Coastland bowling attack taking four wickets for just 12 runs, as Poverty Bay were bowled out for 81, with James Boyd also in good form taking two wickets. Francios Potigieter top scored with a crisp 20 as the Bay side cruised to a six wicket win.

BOP Lakeland faced a big ask after Counties Manukau set a target of better than seven runs an over.

Jonty Keaney took three wickets as Counties posted 146/7. While Lakeland batsmen Pip Thickpenny (44) and Lasith Goonalilaka (34) got good starts, their efforts were in vain with Lakeland were restricted to 124/5.
