Helping hand for triathletes

Ever wondered what it takes to be the next Bevan Docherty or Andrea Hewitt? Well here is your chance.

Every Wednesday Triathlon Tauranga is holding a free beginners triathlon evening at Salisbury Wharf in Pilot Bay to help educate new athletes on the sport.

Triathlon Tauranga hold free beginners sessions every Wednesday at Pilot Bay in the aim to build people's confidence in the sport.

A youth group from under 15-year-olds runs from 2-6pm and an adult novice group from 6-7pm.

Triathlon Tauranga club coach Lyndy Wickham says holding weekly events gives people an option in the sport and in some ways is a stepping stone.

'Half the people don't know where to start and don't know where to go.”

After initially being approached by a few people unsure how to get involved with triathlons, Lyndy began holding the sessions in what she describes as one the 'fastest growing” sports in New Zealand.

'People see a triathlon and think ‘I don't have the right gear or the right bike'. It's all about building their confidence.

'It's such a lifestyle sport as you can fit it in round life and do a bit here and a bit there.”

Participants are taught a range of skills and necessities for the sport including bungy laces, putting baby powder in their caps and oil on their wetsuits as well as practical sessions at Pak n Save and the Shoe Clinic.

Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult throughout the youth sessions, something which is beneficial for both child and parent.

'It becomes a bit of a family affair with a wide range of abilities.”

When asked whether the next the next Olympian is waiting in the wings, Lyndy is not too sure.

'Well you just never know.”
