'Spectacular' results at cricket cup

Black Cap quick bowler Trent Boult took the opportunity of a short break before the England tour to turn out for Element Cadets against Eves Realty Greerton with spectacular results at the Williams Cup competition yesterday.

Cadets, who entered the Williams Cup fourth round with an unbeaten record, were the first to bat at the Tauranga Domain and were removed for what looked to be a modest 130 runs.

Boult top scored for his side with 26 and Morgan Bidois posting 20 runs. Veteran Greerton bowler Murray Jarvis grabbed three wickets for just three runs with Mathew Earl Campbell Thomas and Brett Hampton taking two wickets apiece.

Trent Boult opening the bowling, immediately having the Greerton top order in desperate trouble, dismissed the first three batsmen for ducks.

Bay of Plenty representative master blaster Brett Hampton showed some resistance to Boult, however when he was removed for 20, and Greerton were in real trouble.

Boult continued his express deliveries and finished the match with eight wickets for 37 runs. Greerton were dismissed for 93 to keep intact Cadets unbeaten start to the Williams Cup.

Te Puke also kept their place at the top of the table with the Cadets in a battle of attrition with Mount Maunganui at the Te Puke Domain.

The home side batted first and reached 183/7 with Mitch McCann continuing his golden run of form to top score with a sparkling 80 runs.

The Mount Maunganui top score of 36, by new Bay skipper Peter Drysdale, told the tale of containment by the Te Puke bowling attack.

McCann backed up his performance with the bat taking four wickets with Jeremy Bates returning 3/37.

The final stages of the encounter turned into a cliffhanger with Mount Maunganui bowled out for 179 to hand Te Puke a four run victory.

Tauranga Boys' College batsman Tom MacRury, who was to make his Bay of Plenty first eleven debut against Poverty Bay the next day, showed his immense talent blasting an unbeaten 132 against BOP Indians at Smallbone Park in Rotorua.

BOP Indians led by solid 72 from Bharat Popli reached 207/9 with James Boyd taking three wickets for the students.

However, MacRury simply batted the match away from the home team, in an innings which included a six and 16 fours.

Tauranga Boys' College coach Mark Orchard was also there at the end with an undefeated 60 as his side cruised to a nine wicket win.

East Bay United continued their roller coaster season when they beat Rotorua Central by seven wickets in Whakatane.

Led by current Northern Knight bowler Graeme Aldridge who took four wickets the Eastern Bay team removed the visitors for 185. Shayde Perham top scored for Central with 53 runs.

The home side made easy work of the reply getting home with seven wickets in hand. East Bay United master blaster Alex Yates showcased his batting talent with 87 runs with Mathew Carter posting 66 not out.
