Perfect conditions for showdown

The final showdown of the 2013 Hyundai Tour is set to unfold in excellent surf at Mount Maunganui today with eight new tour champions in the waiting.

Ushering in the first day of autumn, the surf at Tay Street is the best the Hyundai Tour has experienced this year with clean 1.5m waves and favourable winds forecast.

The final round of the Hyundai Surf Tour is being held at Tay Street today and tomorrow.

No tighter is any division compared with the premier Men's Longboard Division with front runners Daniel Procter (Gis) and Ant McColl (Mnt/Tara) squaring off, each looking to secure their first Hyundai Tour title.

Daniel holds the slenderest of leads over Ant only needing to equal or better Ant's result to claim his first title. Ant on the other hand will be doing all he can to finish higher than Daniel to all but secure the title.

Daniel heads into the two day event as favourite despite missing the Sandy Bay leg of the Tour after winning the first two events. However, Ant hopes his inside knowledge will help him claim the title after growing up surfing the Mount Maunganui coastline and winning the same leg in 2012, his one and only tour win to date.

All eyes will be on these two surfers but there is a swag of guys close behind eager to be part of the equation. Zen Wallis (Piha), Phil Morris (Auck) and Matt Cockayne (Mangawhai), ranked third through fifth, will want to finish the year on a high.

Zen won the final event of 2012 when it was staged in near out of control Port Waikato surf while the reintroduction of Thomas Kibblewhite (Red Beach) to the tour has seen him claim the last two events.

Thomas, a two time national champion (2011, 2012) and 2012 Hyundai Tour Champion will be looking for three wins in a row, a feat never achieved on the tour before as some form of consolation prize after missing the first two events of the year taking him out of title contention.

In the Women's Division, Mischa Davis (Piha) has gifted herself a little more room on the ratings than Daniel despite also missing one event this year. Mischa can afford to finish two places below Belinda Goodwin (Rag) and still retain the title. Given her run of results this year includes two firsts and a runner up finish, Mischa will be hard to beat and is set to claim back to back Hyundai Tour's for the Women's Longboard Division.

Jordan Griffin (Mnt) has already sealed the Tour title in the Under 18 Longboard but will be challenged this weekend by the strength of the Whakatane and Ohope surfers who have entered.

Two Bay of Plenty surfers are battling it out for the title in the Over 40 Longboard with Craig Anderson slightly ahead of Guy Rencher. The two surfers sit five points apart meaning the best performance at the final event of the year will be the title clincher.

Only a minor miracle will prevent Mark Hoyle (Orewa) from claiming back to back titles in the Over 50 Longboard Division with his closest rival, David Storck of Piha, nearly 800 points back in second place.

Daniel Kereopa (Rag) has an even bigger lead in the Stand Up Paddleboard Division and only needs to step foot in the water to claim the title after winning all four events contested this year.

In the Stand Up Paddleboard Races, Armie Armstrong (Rag) leads the King of the Waves Division while Annabel Anderson (Auck) leads the open ocean long distance race. Both races will be held on Saturday with courses to be confirmed after assessing wind conditions. The Logger Division will also be contested on Saturday when everyone breaks out their traditional boards for the 'winner takes all' expression session.

Action will take place today and tomorrow from 8am - 4pm at Tay Street.
