Victory chase on St Patrick’s Day

Three Western Bay of Plenty club teams are chasing St Patrick's Day success when they chase the silverware on offer in two regional competitions on Sunday.

The Mount Maunganui Premier team will square off in the grand final of the ND Club championships.

The Bay of Plenty representatives qualified for the ND semi-finals after annexing the BOP Cup before the Christmas holiday break and then defeating Hamilton representatives Star Varsity to book a place in the final stanza.

A Mount Maunganui victory in the ND Club championship will mean a Bay of Plenty side has won the Eric Petrie trophy for the fifth successive season.

For the first time in the last five championship finals the Bay representatives have home advantage with the ND title decider being played at Mount Maunganui headquarters at Blake Park.

Northland representative Kaipara Flats are likely to be desperate for victory after falling at the last hurdle in the last three seasons.

Last year they were defeated by Cadets with Mount Maunganui inflicting defeat in the previous two finals.

The Mount team will be at full strength with the return of the Bay players who have been on Fergus Hickey Rosebowl and Hawke Cup duty.

Bay of Plenty opening batsmen Peter Drysdale and wicket keeper Tim Clarke will bring real resolve to the batting line-up.

Tony Goodin, who obliterated the Bays most wickets in a season record with 44 wickets, will lead the bowling line-up with spin bowler Dale Swan also back in the Mount Premier ranks.

For the third successive season, Mount Maunganui and Katikati will square off in the final of the McNaughton Trophy, to be played at the Bay Oval, Mount Maungnaui on Sunday.

Katikati will be hoping its third time lucky after being beaten by Mount Maunganui in the 2011 and 2012 McNaughton Trophy Finals.

In 2011 Katikati elected to bat first and mustered just 83 with Mount Maunganui chasing down the target with seven wickets to spare.

Last season Katikati won the toss and put Mount Maunganui in to bat, who went on to post 323/3, then removed Katikati for 140 to cruise to a second consecutive victory.
