Rainbow World Cup at Bay oval

Bay of Plenty Cricket's quest to introduce more primary and intermediate girls to cricket will see 12 teams of girls taking part in the Rainbow World Cup at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Thursday.

Earlier this season former Bay of Plenty Women's player Tori Horsley was contracted by Northern Districts Cricket to deliver an introduction to cricket for girls in the Bay of Plenty.

The new Girls' programme has been formulated along the lines of the very successful Have a Go cricket programme where new recruits are taught the fundamentals of holding and bat and throwing a ball along with fielding skills.

In term four last year Tori made the rounds of Bay of Plenty Schools to introduce Go Girl which is a six-week programme that has gone on to be a huge success in the first term of the 2013 school year.

The purpose of the Rainbow World Cup is to provide a fun environment for the youngsters to take part in three games, utilising the skills that they have learnt in the Go Girl programme.

While there will be no winners and losers at the Bay Oval, it is an opportunity for the mainly Year five and six girls to experience the joys of batting, bowling and fielding against girls with similar levels of cricket skills.

The next step in the girls' introduction to the cricket programme will be the proposed launch of a girls' primary competition next season.
