Curtain-raiser at Maramatanga Park

A large crowd is likely to watch much of the Te Puna verses Tauranga Sports curtain raiser at Maramatanga Park this Saturday.

While the two teams sit at differing places on the point's standings, there is still likely be a battle for victory on offer.

Five of the six Seeka KI Western BOP competition games to be played this Saturday are entrées to Baywide Premier main attractions.

Defending Western BOP titleholders Tauranga Sports, have made all the running in the first six rounds of the local rugby competition and will take a season unbeaten run on to Maramatanga Park.

The Tauranga Sports second fifteen have scored 241 points, on the way to defending the Hardy Rosebowl (WBOPRFS Challenge Trophy) on all six occasions this year.

By contrast Te Puna sits towards the bottom of the point's ladder however they revealed their potential last weekend when they provided Arataki with their first loss of the season. The 17-10 victory to the Blues and Black uniformed side showed that they won't be pushover when the defending Western BOP champions pay a visit on Saturday afternoon.

Mount Maunganui, who cut loose against Greerton Marist last weekend winning 86-17, could have a real challenge on their hands at Blake Park against Judea.

The side based at Maharia Winiata Park made a slow start to the season but have really ramped their game up in the last three weekends, winning all three encounters.

Sitting in second place, Arataki will want to put their round six defeat behind them, when they meet Eastern Districts at the Paengaroa Domain. Katikati and Greerton Marist should have a good tussle in the early match at Moore Park, the Rangataua and Matakana Island clash could go down to the wire, while Te Puke Sports face Rangiuru in a Te Puke derby at Murray Salt Stadium.

Entering last week's Seeka Western BOP Colts penultimate round, the championship title looked done and dusted, with Mount Maunganui holding an unbeaten record.

However a hard fought 26-20 victory to Greerton Marist over the Mount last Saturday, gave Greerton a chance of taking out the 2013 Western Bay age group title.

The scenario is that Mount Maunganui have drawn the bye in the last round, but lead the standings by four points.

Greerton Marist could take the title if they defeat Te Puke Sports, in a match where the Western Bay challenge prize of the Oliver Cup is also on the line.
