Second half brings fresh challenges

Week eleven looms as a pivotal week for a number of teams on the fringe of the top four, but their tasks could not be tougher.

Whakarewarewa, just two points adrift from fourth-placed Mount Maunganui, will have their work cut out at home against an unbeaten Tauranga Sports side who dismantled Greerton Marist 44-15 in wet conditions last week.

Mount Maunganui need to beat Rangataua to retain their spot in the top four.

Likewise, sixth-placed Te Puna, themselves just two points shy of the Mount's total of 27 competition points, have a tough match against defending champions Te Puke Sports at Murray Salt Stadium.

Te Puke will be out to prove a point and protect second place from a Greerton Marist side faced with the somewhat easier prospect of a home match against last-placed Paroa.

Opotiki's home clash with Rotoiti is sure to be hotly contested given the seventh-placed hosts sit just four points outside the playoff positions.

Mount Maunagnui will seek to make their first stint in the top four last more than a week by putting away a Rangataua outfit unlucky not to have more than one win and a draw to show for their efforts.

Division One

Division One leaders Rangiuru's match with fourth-placed Katikati shapes as the big game of the weekend.

No fewer than four teams – Waikite, Te Teko, Whakatane Marist and Ngongotaha – sit within six points of fourth place, with Katikati really needing a win to hold on to their position.

The same goes for a Rangiuru side knowing what it is like to be bumped out of the top spot. With Poroporo sitting just two points back with an easier assignment at home against winless Ruatoki, the first-placed side will need to be on their game to keep control of the division.

The four teams on the cusp of the playoff positions meet in two other big match-ups.

Fifth-placed Waikite – just one point back from Katikati with 27 points – will face eighth-placed Ngongotaha at Bellvue Road. A win would put the visitors right in the mix, while a loss would have precisely the opposite effect.

Te Teko travel to play Whakatane Marist in the other big match of the round.

Both teams are locked on 23 competition points, so one of them will get a decent push towards the postseason with a win at Rugby Park.

Kahukura have a date at Marist Park with Marist St Michael's in the other game of the round, a win possibly pushing them into a home playoff spot.

CBOP Senior

Murupara meet Eastern Pirates at Ngati Manawa Park in the only match of the round.

EBOP Senior

Waimana's match with Galatea at Waimana Domain shapes as the tightest match in the Eastern Bay of Plenty senior competition.

Four points and two spots separate the two teams, with second-placed Waimana after a win to keep touch with first-placed Kawerau.

The competition leaders have an away match with struggling Matata, while Edgecumbe host Taneatua in the other match of the round.

Bayfair Baywide club rugby draw for June 1, unless otherwise stated.
