Seeka KI championship heats up

All six teams in the Seeka KI Western BOP championship have an extra reason for chasing success this weekend, with two playoff berths on the line.

Arataki, Judea and Matakana Island are the Western Bay contender for the two places, with the winner of the Baywide Division Two final gaining a spot in next year's first division.

Mount Maunganui and Tauranga Sports will square off in the second round of the Merv Scholes cup along with Tauranga putting the Jordan Cup on the line.

Mount Maunganui, Tauranga Sports and Rangataua second fifteens also have their sights on a Baywide prize with two Western Bay sides moving forward to next month's Baywide Senior Reserve championship qualifying rounds.

The two Western Bay Senior Reserve heavyweights of Mount Maunganui and Tauranga Sports will square off at Blake Park in round two of the Merv Scholes Cup on Saturday afternoon.

Both teams have dominated the championships in the last decade and the winner will take a big step towards books a playoff spot.

Arataki, winners of the Baywide Division One title a few years ago, have a return to Baywide rugby firmly on their agenda and travel to play Matakana Island on the Island. In their first meeting this season Arataki won a torrid battle emerging 37-24 victors.

Revenge will be on Judea's mind when they meet Rangataua at Maharaia Winiata Park, after a narrow loss in the Gilbey Cup competition. With the Hardy Rosebowl also on the line, Rangataua sneaked home to post a 24-22 win at Te Ariki Park.

In the Phelan Cup title race, Te Puke Sports and Te Puna both posting first round will face off at Murray Salt Stadium, Eastern Districts are at home to Katikati while Rangiuru and Greerton Marist meet at Centennial Park.

The Baywide Premier clash at Blake Park between Mount Maunganui and Tauranga Sports, will have an added attraction with the WBOPRFS Challenge prize of the Jordan Cup also up for grabs. Tauranga Sports won the Jordan Cup from Greerton Marist on the first day of the 2013 rugby season.

The match-ups between the two teams who are separated by the Tauranga Harbour Bridge, are played with pride and passion with bragging rights always on the line and usually go down to the wire.
