Stan Meads cups heats up

Defending Stan Meads Cup titleholders Te Awamutu, have their aim firmly on a three peat of Stan Meads trophy titles, after claiming the inaugural title in 2011 and defeating Piako in an absolute thriller last year.

On crossover finals day on Saturday the defending champions will square off against Piako in a repeat of last year's title decider. Te Awamutu will also put the Peace Cup (SMC Challenge Trophy) on the line for the last time this season.

In dramatic finish to the 2012 SMC championship, the two teams were locked at 13 points apiece with the clock ticking down, Piako then kicked a penalty to take a three-point advantage before Te Awamutu slotted another penalty goal to lock the scores at 16 all, at the end of regular time.

The game than went into extra time with Te Awamutu scoring two tries, with the final score line of 26-16, not reflecting the closeness of one hundred minutes of rugby.

In the other playoff with a SMC championship final berth at stake, Eastern Bay of Plenty will take on Hamilton at Rugby Park in Whakatane. The Eastern Bay side weren't beaten in the qualifying rounds, defeating King Country and Thames Valley B and posting a 16 all draw with Piako last weekend.

Hamilton's only defeat was a relatively narrow loss to Te Awamutu 26-19.

In the SMC Plate Western Bay of Plenty will host Thames Valley B at Maramatanga Park at Te Puna - while King Country B who beat their Thames Valley counterparts in round three to earn a home semi-final, will meet Central Bay of Plenty in Te Kuiti.

The management of the Stan Meads Cup representative XV, will be taking a keen interest in the weekend matches, with the team to be announced at the conclusion of SMC Finals Day on Sunday. The SMC representatives will play a Colin Meads Invitation team at Te Kuiti on Sunday September 22.
