Stern challenge at Te Kuiti

The inaugural Stand Meads Cup XV faces a big test when they play the Colin Meads Invitation team on Sunday at Rugby Park in Te Kuiti.

It was decided at the 2013 Annual General Meeting of the SMC committee that a SMC XV would be selected to play a representative match as an extended pathway for players in the SMC competition.

The SMC XV selectors have gone to the form book from the Stan Meads Cup with over two thirds of the first SMC XV coming from Te Awamutu and Eastern Bay of Plenty Sub-Unions, which fought out the Stan Meads Cup Final at Te Awamutu last Sunday, September 15.

However, the new representative team will face a stern challenge from the Sir Colin Meads Invitation side.

The Invitation team selectors have come up with a team chock full of former first class players with a good number of former Super Rugby players in the line-up.

Deon Muir who played 101 games for Waikato before heading off to Japan for a seven year stint will wear the coveted number eight jersey.

Another Waikato centurion in Rhys Duggan will direct the Colin Meads back line from halfback. Former NZ Sevens and Bay of Plenty speedsters Bradley Fleming and Damien Karauna give the backline plenty of firepower and could provide the opposition with plenty of headaches.
