Hot pink support in the city

UPDATE 6.45PM: The city's streets are turning pink tonight as thousands turn out for the 2013 House of Travel Hot Pink Walk.

About 3000 participants have decked themselves out in a range of pink outfits making their way from Masonic Park in a 2.8km loop through the city finishing back at The Strand for entertainment.

And everyone is going the distance in their support for breast cancer with an array of costumes including pink flintstones, pink pyjamas, and pink fairies.

'I am really impressed with everyone who has gone out of their way with the costumes; they have been fantastic,” says Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga Trust service coordinator Lea Lehndorf.

Lea is pleased with the strong turnout of people who are getting behind the event despite the blustery conditions - well up on last year's 2500.

'What's a little bit of rain compared to chemotherapy or being diagnosed with breast cancer?

'It's really good to see them having some fun but it also shows the support for women and men who have breast cancer. While it's rare for men to get it we do have some in the Bay of Plenty and we must remember cancer affects the whole family no matter what.”

Tickets cost $5 and all funds raised stay local and go directly to Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga.
