Top of the table clash in Te Puke

The key match-up in the Baywide Cup premier cricket title race on Saturday will take place at the Te Puke Domain, where City Sports Bar Te Puke will face competition leaders Mount Maunganui.

Mount Maunganui leads the Baywide Cup standings courtesy of being the only team to complete a match during last Saturday's heavy showers.

While Te Puke batted through their innings against BOP Indians, which included a century to skipper to Mitch McCann, the match was eventually abandoned.

The Baywide rule book then allocated Te Puke the average of the points in the completed Mount verses Central game.

Not only do Mount Maunganui and Te Puke go into the encounter at the Te Puke Domain with undefeated season records, but they will battle out another round in the intense rivalry between that two clubs.

Mount Maunganui spin bowler Dale Swan has made an outstanding start to the season, grabbing a more than handy lead in the season bowling honours.

Swan who has played 27 matches for the Bay senior representative team, has taken 10 wickets in just two matches including a six wicket bag on opening day.

Leading the Baywide batting list is Tauranga Boys College first eleven mentor Mark Orchard. In round one Orchard blasted an unbeaten 146 runs against East Bay United to get his season off to flying start.

On Saturday Tauranga Boys travel to Rotorua to meet Central at Boord Park.

One Central player to make his mark is new recruit Kyle Blanchard, who is equal top of the catches in the field list with three catches.

Element IMF Cadets, who have been one of the Baywide heavyweights in the last two decades, will play their fixture against BOP Indians on the artificial surface at Ferguson Park.

While the Rotorua visitors sit near the bottom of the standings they have a key strike weapon in Bay of Plenty representative Bharat Popli.

The Bay stroke maker has blasted 817 runs for the Bay in just five seasons.

East Bay United are at home for the first time this season when they host Eves Realty Greerton at Trident High School.

While there is a genuine friendship between the teams off the field, it turns to steely determination when they two sides meet.
