Custody for accused tourist attackers

Four of the five teenagers accused of attacking two German tourists on Boxing Day will remain behind bars until their next appearance.

Police arrested five people, three boys, aged 14, 17 and 18-years-old, and two 15-year-olds and charged them with aggravated robbery.

Two German tourists were attacked while they camped near the Whakatane skatepark.

All five people appeared in Whakatane District Court today where three of the youths have been remanded in custody of Child Youth and Family, one of the adults was remanded in custody and another was released on strict bail conditions to live outside of Whakatane.

Police opposed bail for all five.

They will all reappear on January 17 in Whakatane District Court.

The attacked on a 19-year-old man and 18-year-old woman happened on Boxing Day when the pair were camping near the skatepark at the intersection of McAllister Street and Beach Street in Whakatane when they were attacked.

The woman suffered facial and arm injuries including fractures and the man sustained bruising, lacerations and lost some teeth as a result of the attack.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen says the young couple have showed tremendous fortitude to bounce back from this terrible incident.

'When we spoke to them yesterday they said they were happy that the whole of New Zealand had given them so much support, including letters, after this incident and this was very helpful to them to receive this amount of support.

'They were overwhelmed by the generosity shown by New Zealanders.”

DONATIONS

It would be a really nice gesture if any dental costs not covered by ACC would be covered by donations. All the community support is wonderful, but the visitors shouldn't be left out of pocket for medical or dental costs ... being attacked is bad enough.
