Bay paddlers silver success

A large contingent of Bay of Plenty paddlers will pull on the silver fern this year after being announced in Canoe Slalom New Zealand's representative teams for 2014.

Following the recent selection series a total of 29 paddlers have been selected for upcoming international events in the Senior, Under 23 and Junior classifications.

16-year-old Patrick Washer who made both the Junior team and Senior team in the C1 category.

Of the 29, Canoe Slalom Bay of Plenty boasts a total of 21 paddlers including Luuka Jones, Callum Gilbert, Patrick Washer.

Washer, 16, makes both the Junior team and Senior team in the C1 category after switching to C1 from K1 12 months ago.

And already he is stamping his mark on this class, being the talk of the Australian national championships with the fifth fastest time overall taking out the U18 C1 category ahead of the Australians juniors.

The club also dominated in the junior age group for K1 taking out first in Under 18 with Callum Gilbert, the Under 16 in Jack Dangen and Zach Mutton's success in the Under 14.

For senior representative members they have the opportunity to compete at the five race World Cup Series in Europe between June and August 2014 and at the World Championships at Deep Creek, Maryland, USA in September.

The Under 23 and Junior members will compete at the U23 and Junior World Championships in Sydney in April.

Next race for the talented paddlers from the Bay is the Oceania Champs on the artificial course in Penrith, Sydney in two weekend's time.
