Beach action continues

There is plenty of action on Mount Maunganui Main Beach today with almost 500 junior life savers descending on the sand and surf for the Eastern Regional Junior Championships.

A total of 480 junior life savers are taking to the beach for the second day of the competition which sees competitors race their way to individual and club glory.

Among the hundreds of junior life savers, are as many as 70 Papamoa Surf Life Saving Club junior members who are pulling on the club's blue and gold colours to compete for a fourth Eastern Regional Junior Championship title win.

Junior athletes are coming from throughout the North Island's surf life saving regions including Eastern, Northern and Central.

Fifteen clubs are competing with Omanu's 94 competitors and Mount Maunganui's 93 competitors making up the largest teams.

Beach action continues with the Volleyball New Zealand Secondary Schools Beach Volleyball Championships also on Mount Main Beach.

Volley ballers from more than 140 teams across the country are taking part in the competition with pre-match games already underway and finals scheduled from 3pm.

Tauranga Boys' College, Tauranga Girls' College and Mount Maunganui College are among the 143 teams competing with junior and senior divisions programmed.
