Te Puke to take centre stage

The Western Bay Reserve Grade race for the championship title resumes this Saturday after an extended break for the T20 and Knockout Cup series of games.

While Te Puke sits at the bottom of the standings in the wooden spoon position - teams who underestimate the Te Puke second eleven could receive a nasty shock when they play them in the second half of the season.

In the T20 competition Te Puke finished in second place taking the scalps of Katikati, Tauranga Boys College and Greerton on the way. Last weekend they won their way to the final of the 50 Over Knockout Cup defeating Mount Maunganui in the semi-finals.

This Saturday Te Puke have the opportunity to defeat competition leaders Sangha Raavi, for the second time since the holiday break, after eliminating them from the Knockout Cup.

But the Sangha first team have a batsman of real quality in GS Gargan who blasted 404 runs in the first half of the season.

The formbook suggests second placed Katikati should have little trouble with the Sangha Anna team, with Katikati batsmen Matt Earl sitting in third place on the batting list with 303 runs.

Another to have posted 300 plus is former Bay player and Cadets batsman Grant Manners, with his side squaring off with Tauranga Boys College.

Leading the bowling stakes with 22 wickets is Greerton's Mike Brown, with his team likely to have a battle on their hands with defending Reserve champions, Mount Maunganui.

Joint B Grade competition leaders Wanderers and Grasshoppers will be looking to cement thier advantage at the top of the table.

Hoppers meet bottom of the table Albion, with Wanderers facing Greerton on Ferguson four.

In the third B Grade encounter, Katikati who relinquished the lead last week because of the bye, will take on Mount Masters at Blake Park.
