Blockbuster rugby weekend

An inform Mount Maunganui side will be looking to go one better coming up against fierce rivals Tauranga Sports in a congested weekend of Bayfair Baywide Premier Club Rugby.

Queen's Birthday weekend sees all sides backing up Saturday's play with a second match on Monday in what may help sort out a very congested leader board.

In Round 2 the Mount and Tauranga ground out a tense 24-all draw at Blake Park, the first match since Tauranga defeated the Mount in last year's premiership final.

Mount Maunganui head in with the favourites tag having won its last two, including a tense 21-15 victory against Whakarewarewa, sitting second on the table behind Te Puke.

In comparison Tauranga Sports are in unfamiliar territory, losing its last two bringing its total defeats to three, opposed to dropping the sole game last season.

Mount Maunganui coach Rodney Voullaire says the side is trying to eliminate complacency, taking each game week by week, but is confident his side will rise for the tense fixture.

'It's usually quite an interesting week leading up to a battle of the bridge. They boys will be amping,” says Voullaire.

Tauranga Sports coach Mike Rogers is impressed with how his side's opponents are tracking so far this season and hopeful the side can turn its fortunes around.

'We have been struggling a bit but hope to come through as the underdogs.

On Monday the sides must bounce back with current competition leaders Te Puke hosting Rangataua in the match of the round.

High flying Te Puke have lost just one match so far this season, a 53-10 demolition from Mount Maunganui, and will be keen to continue setting the bar this season.

Rangataua, upsetting Tauranga last weekend, need to log a few more wins to push themselves back into playoff contention as they currently sitting back in seventh.

Te Puke coach Craig Jeffries is wary of the sides match with Opotiki on Saturday leading up to Rangataua, a test that is sure to test the squads resilience.

"We have to get through the Opotiki game first but it'll be tough backing up after a game two days before,” says Jeffries.

'We have got a lot of depth and hopefully that depth will see us through."

Rangataua coach Paul Pou says Te Puke are the front runners of the competition for a good reason and a massive effort will be required the side runs out against them.

'They are always tough opponents and even tougher at home. We need to maintain our composure and complete the small things well if we are going to be competitive,” says Pou.

'We have mustered a few good performances and some not so good, so consistency is what we need for every game we play from here on."
