Steamers hopefuls line up

The final make-up of the Bay of Plenty Steamers will become more certain in the coming days with the best of the Bay set to clash in a resurrected trial match.

For the first time since 2009, 43 players – current High Performance squad players and 15 players who have performed well in club rugby – will take part in the match at Te Puke's Murray Salt Stadium in Te Puke from 7pm.

The match sees a Wasps side against a Blue and Gold selection, with a further 15 players on a bench available to both groups of coaches.

It comes seven weeks out from the Bayfair Baywide Premier Rugby final with many players beginning to find some solid form heading into the business end of the season.

Amongst the sides are familiar Steamers Johan Bardoul, Pingi Tala'apitanga and Tino Nemani – all starting on the bench – while new faces include Teddy Stanaway, Jono Kitto Byron McGuigan.

Following the trial, the squad will be narrowed down to play a three way game with the Chiefs and Harlequins on the June 17. The final Steamers squad will be announced at the end of June.
