Top teams to clash

A top of the table match of epic proportions is predicted for this weekend as competition leaders Te Puke and Mount Maunganui Sports continue jostling for pole position.

Round 15 of Bayfair Bay Wide Premier Club Rugby sees the competitions top two teams square off at Murray Salt Stadium in what bodes as a crucial match in both sides keeping a slender distance from the chasing pack.

Te Puke reclaimed top spot on the ladder thanks to a 36-34 win over Te Puna and an injury ravaged Mount Maunganui stumbling 29-18 to Greerton Marist. The Mount's loss also signalled the end to a five-match winning streak.

The result leaves Te Puke on 53 points and the Mount on 49 with Tauranga Sports, Whakarewarewa and Greerton Marist breathing down their necks on 45, 44 and 42 respectively.

Mount Maunganui head coach Rodney Voullaire says Te Puke is one of the top teams in the competition and deserves the top of the table status.

After being decimated by injuries in recent weeks the side is 90 per cent back to full strength from the 12 current players on the injuries list, something Voullaire is relieved about.

The coach, expecting the biggest challenge to date, is confident both teams can put on another memorable day of top class club rugby with players from both teams wanting to impress Bay of Plenty Steamers coaches.

'We are all looking forward to the challenge especially at their home ground with their ever so quiet crowd,” says Voullaire.

'It won't be the whitewash it was when we last played and I'm sure they are wanting to put a little damper on that last match we played at home – a match that I'll never forget personally.”

Te Puke's head coach Craig Jeffries knows the match looms as a 'massive game” especially after Greerton beat the Mount last week.

He says the Mount is a strong side that punished them in the last round, referring to the 53-10 first round loss, but his charges are keen to make amends.
