Te Puke leads chasing pack

Fresh from reclaiming the top spot in Bayfair Baywide Premier Club Rugby a high flying Te Puke outfit must quickly turn its attention to its next top four threat in Whakarewarewa.

Round 16 of the competition pits the two sides against each other - Te Puke looking to extend its eight point lead at the top while Whakarewarewa needs a win to strengthen its top four credentials.

Te Puke last week accounted for Mount Maunganui Sports 24-18, sending them back to top sport after their rival's brief week-long stint in first place. It also cements their position as competition favourites heading into the business end of the season.

Te Puke lead on 58 points followed by the Mount and Tauranga Sports, both on 50, with Whakarewarewa rounding out the top four with 49.

Te Puke coach Craig Jeffries knows Whakarewarewa will be a huge challenge, especially playing at their home ground, but implores it is business as usual for his side.

'When we played Whaka last time, they were a bit depleted in the backs and gave us a hell of a game. We were lucky to come out on top,” says Jeffries.

'We have a bit of an injury crisis on our side at the moment but we're looking to come out on top once again."

Whakarewarewa coach Ngarimu Simpkins says though the side is aware of Te Puke's dominant form in this season's competition they are up for the challenge.

"Well we're standing in fourth place on the table at the moment and they're in first.

'Te Puke have been the on form team all season and we've had a bit of a rocky road. We're looking to beat them at home this weekend."
