A manhunt is underway in the Eastern Bay of Plenty after a prisoner escaped from a van while in transit between Waikeria Prison and Opotiki District Court.

Police say the Joel John Graham escaped from the van in the area of Church Street about 10am.

A police dog unit has been called in to help track a man who has escaped custody in Opotiki.

He is described as a 21-year-old male Maori, about 177cm tall and of medium build.

'When he escaped he was wearing orange prison overalls, but is now believed to be shirtless and wearing only a pair of shorts,” says a statement from police.

'He has a tattoo on his back. Police have set up cordons and a police dog is being used in the search.”

He is facing domestic violence related charges.

Police say anyone who has seen the fugitive should not approach him and call police immediately on 111.
