Papamoa markets move from Plaza

Redevelopments at Palm Beach Plaza in Papamoa are pushing the Papamoa Lions Market from its 13-year-long location, but market organisers are in good spirits.

The market has been running every second and fourth Sunday of the month since 2001 at the Plaza grounds, but will move to Simpson Reserve for the first time on September 28.

Publicity officer Adam McLaughlin says they plan to be well established at the new space in time for the popular Christmas markets.

Adam says the markets began with just 30 stalls, and now average 100 stalls.

'The biggest we've ever had is 234 last Christmas market. Close to Christmas time it gets bigger and bigger.”

Adam says organisers and stallholders are calling the move 'good progress” and are excited for the new location, which will allow for more stall variety and plenty of parking.

'We're very excited. We really hope the public will come to support the stallholders who've been there the last 13 years.

'The new area is bright, sunny and breezy and well maintained and manicured by the council, with good drainage.”

Palm Beach Plaza centre manager David Hill says market organisers were given notice until the end of February, 2015 to re-locate due to the centre's redevelopment.

'They've found a spot and are moving earlier.”

David says an extra 6000m2 of retail space is planned for the area currently occupied by the markets.

'This year we're just doing a facade upgrade around the Countdown [supermarket] area and, kicking off in February, we're incorporating the food court and other speciality stores around there, as well as developing larger format stores on the grassed area.

'It's exciting and we've done a lot of consultation with communities. Everyone's been very enthusiastic and can't wait for all the new stores to come here.”

The Papamoa Lions Markets will operate at their new location on Simpson Reserve from September 28 from 8.15am to 12.30pm.
