Tight tussle in college cricket

The WBOPCA Secondary Schools Division One leader board is a tightly congested affair with Aquinas College and Trident High School currently sitting at the top.

This is despite Aquinas having a game in hand, after the two Western Bay matches to be played last Saturday were abandoned.

However better weather in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, resulted in the Trident verses Mount Maunganui Gold game being completed, with the Eastern Bay school joining Aquinas on 18 points at the top of the leader board.

Trident batted first in the solitary completed match and were removed for 166, before bowling the visitors out for 111, to claim the win points.

Individual honours were taken out by Kevan Arnold (33) Sean Purdy (32) and Chris Tupaea (5/34) for Trident while Caleb Box (3/17) and JD Grant (26) were the top performers for Mount Gold.

This Saturday's round robin play matches up joint competition leaders Aquinas College with Mount Maunganui Gold.

While the form book will favour Aquinas, the Mount Gold side have lost a couple of close encounters and could give their weekend opponents a good challenge at Aquinas College.

Trident High School has home turf advantage, when the Tauranga Boys College third eleven visit the Eastern Bay on Saturday.

Both sides have had their moments in the title race with the match likely to go down to the wire.

Bethlehem College will host Otumoetai College in what could be another close run encounter.
