Crunch time for WBOP cricketers

The business end of the WBOPCA Reserve and B Grade First Round competitions has arrived, with the playoffs in both grades being fought out this Saturday.

In the Reserve Grade title race, top qualifiers Mount Maunganui have earned a home semi-final at Blake Park against long time rivals Cadets.

With a big individual innings likely to propel a team to the title decider, Mount Maunganui have the seasons highest run score in their side.

Russell Williams has set the pace throughout the season with a 294 runs and is a genuine match winner.

But experience is also a valuable factor in the hot bed of the playoffs, with Cadets Grant Manners having experience in spades.

The former Bay of Plenty batsman, who wore the Bay uniform on 79 occasions, knows how to dig in in adverse circumstances and could prove a real thorn in the side of the Mount bowlers.

Tauranga Boys College second XI, has been the revelation of the first round competition finishing second in the round robin play. They meet current Baywide Reserve titleholders Katikati at Ferguson Park.

Sitting in second place on the season bowling honours is Tauranga Boys College Brad Howard, with 12 bowling scalps.

Katikati have a wise owl in their ranks in former Thames Valley representative Matt Earle.

The all-rounder heads the bowling stakes with 13 wickets and also holds a prominent position in the batting honours.

Top qualifier in the B Grade round robin qualifying rounds, was Cadets who have led the standings throughout the first half of the season.

On Saturday they meet former multiple B Grade titleholders Grasshoppers, at Cadets home base at the Tauranga Domain.

Te Puke region Singh XI has made an excellent start to their debut season in the second echelon competition, finishing second to Cadets.

Centennial Park in Te Puke will host the Singh XI's bid to make the title decider where they will meet Katikati.

The Katikati side has plenty of youth in their ranks and should give the home side a determined challenge.
