Bay sides make winning start

Bay of Plenty Lakeland has made an impressive start to the annual ND Primary Cricket Tournament easily defeating tournament hosts Hamilton on day one.

Played in Hamilton from Monday to Wednesday, the Waikato regional side opted to bat first reaching 139/9 in their allotted overs.

Cameron Ingram was the best of the Lakeland bowling attack taking three wickets for 32 runs, while Quinn Alexander returned 2/14.

The Lakeland opening pair, had little trouble with the Hamilton bowling attack, with the Bay side reaching their target for the loss of a solitary wicket.

Such was the dominance of the Lakeland openers of Bradley Rumble and Ben Astwood that they put together an opening stand of 119, before Astwood wass dismissed for 33.

Rumble was there at the end of the match finishing with an unbeaten 64.

The clinical victory over Hamilton, gave the Lakeland team their second victory in the 2014 ND Primary competition from three matches – ahead of today's showdown with Counties Manukau.

BOP Coastland took first use of the batting crease against Waikato Valley and mustered an impressive 188/8.

Fergus Lellman top scored with 65, with Hunter Dickson contributing a handy 26 runs.

At 138/5 the Waikato Valley side were in with a chance, however some determined Coastland bowling captured a number of cheap wickets late in the innings.

The Coastland team grabbed the second Bay of Plenty victory on the opening day of tournament, when restricting Waikato Valley to 158/9.
