Top contenders meet again

The WBOPCA Reserve Grade First Round title will be fought out by the two teams who have forged a great rivalry in the Western Bay ranks over the years.

Mount Maunganui and Katikati have dominated the Baywide and Reserve grade titles for the last five seasons.

The Mount have won multiple Western Bay titles, while Katikati are the defending Baywide (McNaughton Trophy) Reserve Grade Champions and have met the Mount in the McNaughton final the last three seasons.

On Saturday the two arch rivals booked a berth in this weekend's title decider in contrasting circumstances.

Top qualifier the Mount sneaked home in relatively low scoring match with Cadets. Russell Williams top scored with 42 runs as the Mount were removed for 155 at Blake Park.

Cadets just failed by eight runs to pull off an upset victory with Grant Manners posting his side's top score of 65.

Katikati made sure that Tauranga Boys College faced a big challenge in their turn at bat, after the side from the extremities of the Western Bay posted 224 all out.

Matt Warren and Matt Harrison both grabbed half centuries with Tauranga Boys bowler Harrison Williams returning 3/20.

A five wicket bag by Katikati bowler Kevin Reynolds did the damage, as the Tauranga Boys second XI were removed for 125.

Katikati have a chance at both Western Bay titles, with their B Grade youngsters qualifying to meet Cadets in the First Round championship decider.

Cadets who have led the way at the top of standings throughout the competition, made sure of berth in the final, with a dominant batting performance against Grasshoppers.

Toby Russell blasted 108 with Tom Pamment also in grand form finishing with 87 runs, as their side posted a massive 240 for the loss of just two wickets.

Cadets laid down the gauntlet to Katikati when they removed Grasshoppers for 135, to move into the B Grade First Round Final.

Katikati were involved in match that went down to the wire, when they reached 165 all out and then bowled the Singh XI out for 151 to claim a 14 run win.
