WBOP cricket back in action

Bay of Plenty's summer of cricket re-ignites this weekend with the WBOPCA Reserve Grade T20 competition expected to play out another battle between Western Bay Reserve heavyweights Mount Maunganui and Katikati.

But first sides will warm up for their head to head clash, later in the afternoon, at 12pm at Ferguson Park.

Current WBOPCA Reserve First Round titleholders Katikati will square off with 2014 Reserve Grade champions R&A Sangha, with Mount Maunganui meeting long time club rivals Te Puke in the other Pool A encounter. On the other side of the draw, Greerton will play Sikh Sports while Cadets face Tauranga Boys College.

Katikati and Mount Maunganui have posted a win apiece this season, with the winner of the round two match-up, likely to take a big step in reaching the T20 title decider the following weekend.

In round four of the Western Bay Shield preliminary competition, the Mount side grabbed first blood when they blasted a remarkable 269/2, with Hayden Byrnes top scoring with 112 and Russell Williams posting an unbeaten 98 runs.

The Mount bowlers then went on to remove Katikati for 232.

In the Western Bay Shield Final, Katikati reached 209/9 then bowled Mount Maunganui out for 166, to claim the first piece of Western Bay Reserve Grade silverware of the season.

Other round two matches will see Te Puke take on R&A Sangha, Sikh Sports squaring off against Tauranga Boys College and Greerton playing Cadets.

The Western Bay B Grade teams, will open their second half of the season campaigns with three rounds of knockout competition, which will culminate in a Knockout Cup title decider at the Bay Oval.

While the winners on Saturday will progress to the next round, the beaten sides will drop down into a plate competition.

Western Bay 2014 B Grade champions Wanderers, who lost their way a little in the pre-holiday season competition, will play Katikati at Moore Park in Katikati.

The Katikati team of youngsters went all the way to the 2014/15 First Round title decider, before losing to Cadets.

Cadets who led throughout the First Round title race travel to play the Singh XI at Centennial Park in Te Puke, Grasshoppers meet Albion at Mitchell Park, with Greerton hosting Mount Maunganui at Pemberton Park.
