Greerton chase ND club champs

The Eves Realty Greerton premier cricket team will be taking a journey into the unknown, when they play Maungakaramea from Northland, in the final of the ND Club Championships at Pemberton Park on Sunday.

A little research revealed that the Maungakaramea Cricket Club is 15 minutes south west of Whangarei and that Black Cap Tim Southee is a registered member of the Northland club.

Greerton captain Shane Wineti is really looking forward to the challenge against Maungakaramea on Sunday.

'I am very privileged to take a great group of young men out onto Pemberton Park on Sunday. They all make my job easy and have been hungry for success this season.

'Obviously we have genuine match winners with both bat and ball, but I think our team chemistry is a real strength. We are all best mates and spend a lot of time together off the field and we play for each other.

He adds: 'I believe all twelve players are the key to winning the ND Club Champs title, with it taking a complete team effort to win on Sunday. Everyone has a role in the team and in order for us to win all twelve players will need to contribute”.

The Northland team are likely to bring a very strong line-up to play the Bay of Plenty representatives, who won through to the final to represent their province.

Cody Andrews has opened the bowling for ND A, while Kurtly Watson is an ex New Zealand Under 19 representative. Nick Stobbart is another very promising young bowler.

Maungakaramea also has experience in spades in former ND and Wellington batsmen Neal Parlane. A veteran of more than 100 First Class and List A encounters, the Northland batsman recorded 12 first class centuries with a highest score of 193.

However, Greerton have a number of match winners in their ranks and won't be overawed by the Northland line-up.

Bay of Plenty master blaster Brett Hampton owns the Bays second highest all time score, after he smashed 194 against Hamilton in a Hawke Cup challenge two years ago. Hampton is also a bowler of rare ability with Bay of Plenty best figures of 7/60.

Tom MacRury and Cameron Neal, are two other current Bay representative players in the Greerton squad for Sunday, with both having a number of centuries to their name. Charles Williams and Murray Jarvis bring a multitude of experience to the side with bat and ball respectively, with all-rounder Richie Earl another club stalwart.

The Greerton bowling attack is likely to be spearheaded by Bay of Plenty quick bowler Campbell Thomas in tandem with Hampton. Dan Spencer took a seven wicket bag in Baywide club cricket earlier in the season with Murray Jarvis and James Boyd extremely useful change bowlers.
