T20 finals heat up

The second piece of the current seasons Baywide Cricket silverware will be presented tomorrow - after the final of the Lonestar Tauranga T20 is fought out at the Bay Oval at Blake Park, Mount Maunganui.

The early afternoon qualifying round sees five teams with a theoretical chance of making the final stanza.

Last weekend's two rounds of upset results, reinforced that any side is the eight team Baywide competition can win on the day, with reputations counting for nothing in the quick-fire action.

Not only will the five contenders be playing for a place in the title deciders, but the teams out of contention, will take great delight in playing a spoiling role.

Leading into round five, Carrus Mount Maunganui and Element IMF Cadets sit at the top of the standings on eight points. Defending titleholders Rotorua Central lurk just solitary point behind, while Whakatane United and Tauranga Boys College who both posted two wins last week, are another point adrift.

While the formbook says that Cadets should beat BOP Indians, the Rotorua side that upset Te Puke and took the Eastern Bay representatives to the wire last week, shows that a Cadets victory is no given.

Eves Realty Greerton might be out of contention for the major prize, but the Pemberton Park side would take great pleasure in knocking the Mount out of the Baywide T20 Grand Final.

The two teams from either side of the harbour bridge, always put bragging rights on the line whenever they meet during the season.

Whakatane United has a slim theoretical chance of making the title decider, but they must knock over Central and then hope other results go their way.

Central were in the box seat entering last Saturdays two rounds, however losses to Cadets and Tauranga Boys' College, mean that they must beat the Eastern Bay representatives to have the opportunity to win back to back T20 crowns.

Tauranga Boys' are in the same position as Whakatane United, of needing a big win and results to go their way to have any hope of making the final. Standing in their path is City Sports Bar Te Puke, who will want to finish the Baywide T20 competition with a win on their ledger card.
