Thick smoke guise for small fire

Large clouds of black smoke over Ohauiti at dusk last night resulted in fire fighters being called about 6pm.

'That was orginally believed to be a house on fire, but which ended up being a small rubbish fire, which was extinguished with a garden hose,” says Greerton station officer Richard Moreland.

'I think it was a mattress or something -from where the original call came from, they would have been looking back up towards it and it was in amongst houses.

"If they saw flame and black smoke they would certainly have thought it was a structure fire.”

The fire fighters extinguished the fire before being called to a motor accident in Cambridge Road.

Nobody was trapped in the nose to tail accident, but Tauranga St John ambulance transported a 65 year old woman to Tauranga Hospital with moderate injuries.

In a seperate incident, an ambulance was called to where a car hit a pedestrian in Waitaha Road at about 4pm.

The 14 year old boy was struck a glancing blow and did not require hospital treatment.
