Greenpeace is leveraging public support for its anti deep sea oil drilling exploration movement by comparing the Rena and Gulf of Mexico disasters.
It is running a petition, now with more than 100,000 signatures on it, including those of actor Lucy Lawless and climate scientist Jim Salinger, calling for a stop to government's oil exploration plans.
It also calls for a halt to government plans to expand the coal industry.
'I'd urge anyone who wants to protect our coasts from an even worse oil spill than that which we saw in Tauranga to sign this petition,” says Lucy.
'By doing so, they'll also be doing something positive about the climate crisis that this planet is facing.”
Climate scientist Jim Salinger agrees.
'Opening up the final, extreme frontiers of the oil industry, whether they are in New Zealand or the Arctic, is only going to make global warming worse now and in the future.
'Decisions we make today will determine the severity of climate change that our children and grandchildren will have to deal with.
'I urge all New Zealanders who care about the future of humanity on this planet to sign this petition.”
Greenpeace NZ climate change campaigner Steve Abel says the petition is needed to get government to take notice.
'People simply aren't buying John Key's line that the Rena spill has no relation to the risks of deep sea oil drilling,” says Steve.
'What the Rena demonstrated was that even a small oil spill, in shallow waters near one of New Zealand's biggest ports, can't be controlled, and will have devastating impacts.
'Yet the Rena spill was not even 0.1 per cent the size of the Deepwater Horizon deep sea oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico last year,” says Steve.
The Rena has spilt about 350 tonnes of oil into the sea, but BP's Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico last year spilt 650,000 tonnes of oil.
BP alone has set aside more than US $40 billion to cover its share of the cost of the disaster.
'Given that international oil giants like Shell, Andarko and Petrobras are planning to drill in New Zealand waters at depths even greater than the 1500 metres the Deepwater Horizon was operating in, the risk of a catastrophic spill happening here is very real.
'Imagine waiting helplessly for hundreds or thousands of times more oil than that which came from the Rena to wash ashore – we must never expose ourselves to that sort of risk.
'The economic impact of deep sea oil drilling on New Zealand's clean green reputation needs to be properly evaluated.
'To understand the extent of the risks posed by deep sea oil drilling, the government needs to extrapolate the economic, ecological and cultural impacts of Rena.
'But as long as they maintain that there is no relation between the two, then they are burying their heads in the sand.”

How many oil spills have we had in the Taranaki Basin in the last 40 years. Nil!!
Great Idea but!
Posted on 09-11-2011 16:01 | By tabatha
These Greenpeace people have a great idea but first they must stop instantly using any form of transport that uses fossil fuels or such like and return to walking, yes walking no bikes as they require oil to keep bearings etc from wearing out. They then need to immediately look at providing another for of transport that does not upset the environment in any way. That rules out animal involvement because of gas emissions. I am not saying I agree with the oil exploration what I am saying is we have invented a way of life that relies on fuel and these people to get total support have to replace what we have with emission and fossil free fuel and remembering oil for bearings is fossil unless from trees.

So what? How many oil spills the size of the Deepwater Horizon had the Gulf of Mexico had?
Global warming is a crock

Im sick of hearing the global warming excuse. And yes we need oil. And we need jobs. My husband has to travel overseas to work in oil and mining. It would be great to have it right on the doorstep instead! Its stupid to have resources galore and not use them.
Greens want more shipping, not less?
Posted on 09-11-2011 18:03 | By Matt
The Greens' want more shipping to occur, one of its Transport Policy points is: "Encourage freight to be shifted off roads and onto rail and coastal shipping." Ref http://www.greens.org.nz/policysummary/transport-policy-summary-smart-moves

We live in the 21century and i for one think we should exploit all our natural resorces to the upmost for the good of the country. The greenies live in a world of their own.
Go Greenpeace!

If we think the oil spill from Rena was bad enough which was 350 tonnes then imagine 650,000 tonnes spilling into our water and beaches. Google the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, read about how this disaster has affected so many peoples health, killed hundreds of thousands of birds and sea life. Have a look at the disgusting images, this is what could happen if we went ahead with deep sea oil drilling. Yes we need more jobs, more oil and money but it's certainly not worth the risk!!!!

I don't care much about all the spin about our green brand just for purposes of selling more stuff overseas. I just want our clean coastline paradise to be free of oil. That is not too much to ask. I would rather NOT have the pleasure of saying "I told you so" when there's a deep sea oil spill coming from 3 kms below the surface of the sea off our coast creating a massive environmental catastrophe hundreds of times worse than what we have with the Rena Oil spill. Just say NO! to deep sea oil drilling before it starts. The lure of economic gains and jobs just isn't worth the risk to our environment. In whose name did the Govt offer all these exploratory licences to offshore drillers? Certainly not in mine!
Why

dont GP put there minds to better things like responce equipment to help stop the oil from doing the damage eg having an open fireplace having a spark guard to stop the house burning down
No Drilling

I support Greenpeace's initiative. I hope the folks here who support the plan to have a Brazilian company search for oil off East Cape have been helping out cleaning up the beaches is all. Re those who ask: how many spills have there been here or there. Well, there have been lots of spills (we only hear about the big ones); and it only takes one to wreck the environment for a long time. And we always get the argument that those of us who don't want offshore drilling have to stop existing because we might use some oil. It's not all or nothing; we're talking about transitioning off this stuff. By that logic, we might also just as well make no effort toward energy efficiency either. Just guzzle as much fuel as you can afford. We're dependent on it, we can't change, so why bother trying. It strikes me as a pretty defeatist attitude.

New Zealand needs to start drilling immediately!!! If we strike black gold then we bring our economy up on par with Australia...Narrow minded Greens...WAKE UP!!!
OMG....

Some of these comments make me sick.....how stupid are you! If this Rena spill isnt a warning to us all then i just dont know what is....we are just lucky its oil from a ship spilling onto our beach and not a oil well! and as for the ones commenting on "keeping up with australia" if australia is so great, bugga off over there, your only wasting space here anyway. Surely the human race is smart enough to come up with other ways, instead of always taking the easy way out. Greenpeace you go for it.......LOUD & PROUD!!!
OMG INDEED!!!!!!!!!!

Our so called modern world has become totally dependant on oil and its entire raft of different products and uses, which is a fact. Also a fact is that the last time so much CO2 was belched out into the environment was about 260 million years ago, the affect was absolutely massive on the whole earth/mother nature that included: oceans died by way of Hydrogen sulfide (deadly poisonous on contact) runaway green house affect of 10+ degrees Celsius, that trigged the melting of the frozen methane on the sea floor amounting to mega millions of tonnes being released and so bubbling out into the atmosphere, that in turn added another 10+ degrees Celsius to the global temperatures. It was so warm that it was tropical at the polls, that means no ice, ice is essential to the ocean currents and wellbeing as well as reflecting heat and sunlight back into space. An excess of CO2 an especially methane creates a blanket so accelerating the heating affects. Mother Nature does have a self rectifying mechanism, however that kicks in once more or less everything has died. HINTS FOR YOU: Gulf of Mexico already displays the affects of Hydrogen Sulfide, ice is melting, sea levels are rising .... There are plenty of hints out there if only your 'see' and don't just look. 260 million years ago is when most oil/gas/coal reserves were created as a result of the events noted above, it is Mother Natures way to cleanse the bad stuff out of the air. All of this took millions of years to happen, we are re-creating it in 100-200 years tops. BIGGEST HINT: The oil companies know all about this and have done so for a long time but of course they are not going to change anything in a hurry right.
Wake up smell the roses but never forget there is a real world out there

Greens do have a point worthy of consideration but they can hardly compare the Rena non event (as it turns out) with the BP Gulf Of Mexico spill.Options need to be provided and the penchant the Greens have for throwing the baby out with the bathwater more often than not gives ammunition to the argument they are nutters.
