Update 11.30am - A suspected gas leak at Tauranga Hospital turned out to be a false alarm.

Fire crews were called to the hospital on Cameron Road following reports of a gas leak on the grounds.

A reporter at the scene who spoke with one of the firefighters says the crew had been called to the job at about 9.30am.

"This isn't a gas leak as such," she says.

"What happened is, the area they are checking has very sensitive sensors, so much so that an alarm can be activated by so much as perfume being sprayed.

"Fire crews have contained the area, ventilated it, and they have been monitoring gas levels in the area which have now dropped back to zero."
