Children from local schools around the district has been celebrating the end of term with art.

Student from Pillans Point School and Tauranga Primary School have been celebrating in style.

On Wednesday September 27, Tauranga Primary School kicked of the art celebrations with seven nation army ringing through the playground, performed by the school band.

All the classrooms were open and displaying all the different types of art that the students have been working on throughout the term.

Principal Fiona Hawes says the art celebration was a way to share the work that the kids have been working on.

'The senior students did screen printing on to tee-shirts and are wearing them around the school as part of the display.”

The Tauranga Primary School band which kicked off the events.

Some of the junior school also did wearable arts and were walking around with capes and masks that they had made.

Tauranga Primary School also had local artists at different stations around the school, showcasing their talents.

They had Jamie Harking doing a 3D chalk art of SpongeBob Square Pants, Todd Couper displaying wood carvings, Jason Porter carving a tango and Rebecca Neale a past pupil doing portrait sketching.

The school also had plenty of performances from the school band, the Kapa Haka group and the school choir.

The Tauranga Primary School's art celebration also ties in with the new mural that they unveiled earlier this month.

Across town at Pillans Point School, they are holding an art expo display pieces of the students art work completed throughout the term.

Year 5 & 6 team leader Kyle Barnard says that this term was a huge visual art focus.

'The theme was ‘our place' and each teacher interpreted it differently as you can tell by the different art work.”

'Every student in the school has at least one piece of art on display. The kids went on different trips throughout the term like visiting the art gallery.”

'There were also a bunch of local artists that would come in and visit the kids and help them out.”

Aside from the art expo, the school also has a couple of new pieces added around the school.

A member of the school board who also works at the art gallery, Mel McDonald, along with students from the school created a school mural.

'The mural reflects the local community and it also has all of the team birds,” says Kyle.

The other added piece of art is the storage cupboard outside the junior classrooms.

The brightly painted blue cupboard is also chalkboard paint, meaning that the students can interact and draw on the structure.

Fuchsia Crockford, a teacher aid from the school created the cupboard along with help with the year 1 and 2 students.

'Every Tui child created a tile for the cupboard,” says Kyle.
