Nervous wait for Rena cargo owner

Craig Fellows and his family are waiting to learn if their possessions are lost at sea as casualties of the Rena's stern section sinking today.

The Fellows came from Australia to live in Tauranga in September last year with their household possessions and family heirlooms transported in a container on the Rena.

See video interview below with Craig Fellows, owner of precious cargo aboard the Rena.

Craig has been talking this morning with container salvage contractor Braemar Howells about the whereabouts of the container carrying his family's possessions.

He says the contractor is finding it difficult to establish if his container had been removed from the stern of the vessel before that ship section sunk today.

He told SunLive that the container had everything in it, but the only things he wants back are the irreplaceable items.

'Videos of the kids' first steps, things they have made at day-care and wedding photos – everything else can be replaced.”

The really sad part of this whole fiasco is that some of the containers have the personal belongings of those emigrating to/from New Zealand inside. Those containers that ended up in the water will of course be water-logged and the contents destroyed. I remember in July 2007 when the container ship the MSC Napoli got beached near Sidmouth in Devon UK - incidentally off a World Heritage Coast site. They too contained other people's personal effect. Not good. The same firm owned the Napoli as owned the Rena. It took the officials over two years to clear the wreck off the site. There were warnings of hypodermic syringes on the beach for three summer seasons after the wreck, the warning signs weren't there this summer, presumably the needles would have rusted away by then. IMHO MSC seem to be a real bunch of cowboy operators and when I emigrate back to NZ I will make sure my container doesn't end up on one of their vessels. CJB
