Maritime New Zealand officials say they will take onboard issues about the Rena disaster raised at a meeting on Wednesday with Tauranga commercial marine operators.
The marine operators included dolphin watchers, fishing and dive charter operators, commercial fishermen and others. About 25-30 attended the meeting.
One of their main concerns is about getting detailed information from MNZ on the disposition of the debris and floating containers.
The commercial operators are facing operating without insurance because their insurance companies are telling them they will not insure against a risk that can be avoided.
The operators are facing going-out-of-business if they cannot put to sea.
With more detailed information about the debris, the operators can make informed decisions about the risk of putting to sea on any given day – and remain insured.
MNZ has that up-to-date information available; the question is how to make it publically available.
For the operators, it also has to be available on weekends when the civil servants have the weekends off.
Commercial fishers also want detailed positions of containers on the sea floor so they don't snag them with their nets.
That information is not yet available because the resources are currently focused on the wreck site.
A suggestion from the floor was to either reduce the exclusion zone around the wreck to 2.5 miles, or ‘take a bite out of it' along the 50 metre contour.
‘Spot X' for many recreational fishers lies in the shoals along the 50 metre contour between Motiti Island and Brewis Shoal – on the fringe of the three mile zone.
'All you are going to be doing is chasing guys all day – that's the reality of it,” says one operator.
It's an issue that MNZ says will be looked at by the harbourmaster.
Another issue raised by an operator was MNZ's slow response time to commercial operator concerns.
At the meeting one operator said issues were raised with MNZ three months ago and nothing has happened since.
'They have no problem contacting us when they need to send a bill,” said another operator.
Other issues raised such as the question of designated shipping lanes in the region are part of the TAIC investigation into the grounding of the Rena on Astrolabe Reef.
