Reports oil and oiled debris from the stricken cargo ship Rena are washing ashore in the Hawke's Bay are unsubstantiated.
Braemar Howells, the company responsible for the recovery of debris and damaged containers from the wreck, has undertaken surveys of the beaches in the Hawke's Bay and Gisborne and did not locate any oil or oiled debris.
Braemar spokesperson Monique Balvert-O'Connor says no oiled debris or oil was found by assessment teams.
Monique says Braemar undertook surveys of the Hawke's Bay region after receiving reports of small amounts of 'possible Rena debris washing ashore”.
Braemar did locate 20 small packets of rice were found washed up at Mahanga Beach in the lower Gisborne area, upper Hawke's Bay region, however, Monique says they were not oiled.
