Winter driving conditions on Desert Road

A road snowfall warning is in place for the Desert Road, as temperatures plummet around the country today.

The MetService is forecasting a high of 15 degrees in the BOP today, with an overnight low of seven.

It is currently 13 degrees in Tauranga and eight degrees in Rotorua.

Tomorrow is looking slightly warmer, with a high of 18 degrees forecast for Tauranga and 15 for Rotorua.

The drop in temperatures can be attributed to the snow in the Central North Island today.

The MetService says snow is expected to affect the road today.

'Until 2pm today, 1cm or less of snow may settle on the road above 800 metres.

'Snow flurries may continue through to this evening, however, little if any additional snow is expected to settle on the road.”

In a post on Facebook, the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Central North Island says due to snow in the area, there is winter driving conditions on the Desert Road.

'Please take extra care, increase your following distance and drive to the weather conditions.

'Stay warm and drive safely.”
