COVID-19: A call to make scanning mandatory

A leading coronavirus expert is calling on the Government to make QR code scanning at potential "super-spreader" venues like bars and nightclubs mandatory, amid continued low use of the COVID-19 tracer app.

Epidemiologist Dr Michael Baker says the next six months would be a "very dangerous" time for the country, with high risk of an outbreak while waiting for the vaccine roll-out to begin.

Both the US and the UK are experiencing unprecedented peaks in https://www.sunlive.co.nz/news/260170-appeal-information-on-missing-art.html with the worldwide death toll reaching the grim milestone of two million.

But with no community transmission here, daily use of the Covid Tracer app has fallen off dramatically, down to a fifth of its peak which is causing concern among experts.

Last Monday, a total of 515,759 scans were recorded nationwide, down from the high of 2.5 million on September 4.

Baker says contact tracing of community cases had prevented wider transmission.

Meanwhile, New Zealand health officials are trying to learn more about two travellers on an Auckland to Fiji flight who tested positive for the virus.

The two cases were detected during mandatory tests while the pair were in managed isolation in Nadi.

Both cases had arrived in Fiji on Air New Zealand flight NZ952 from New Zealand on December 24, 2020.

Despite moving through Auckland, a Ministry of Health spokesman said there was no "additional risk" posed by the cases.

Global toll

Over 94.7 million people have been infected by COVID-19 worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The United States continues to record the most infections and fatalities - 23.8 million cases, 396,549 deaths. India and Brazil have also recorded high concentrations of cases and deaths - India has reported 10.5 million cases and 152,274 deaths, Brazil has 8.4 million cases and 209,296 deaths. To date, 2 million people have died from the virus.

International researchers from the World Health Organisation – WHO- are in Wuhan, China, to find clues to the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A new Brazilian variant has also been identified. It shares similarities with the highly-infectious variants from the UK and South Africa. The discovery prompted the UK government to ban flights from 13 South American countries, Panama, Cape Verde and Portugal.

What should I do?

Anyone who wants to get tested can find their local testing centres by visiting the Ministry of Health website.

New Zealand is at COVID-19 alert level 1.

Masks are mandatory for: people travelling on public transport services in and out of the Auckland region; the drivers of small passenger service vehicles in Auckland, such as taxis and app-based ride services; and people travelling on passenger flights throughout New Zealand.

If you are sick, call your GP before you visit, or Healthline on 0800 358 5453.

To avoid contracting and spreading the virus, wash your hands properly, cough and sneeze into the crook of your elbow and throw tissues away immediately.

Reach out, find support from people who care, connect with your community or help a neighbour in need.

If more active tracing...

...capability is required why not just promote that on TV? People are becoming blase about it because there have been no community cases. Half a million registrations on Monday show that some people, at least, are still doing it...raise awareness for the necessity to do it and more will. I don't use a cell phone, but I have no problem with signing in and will resume doing it, now that I know there is still a need to.

Expert ??

Where’s the blue tooth

The government had a successful trial in Ngongotaha with Bluetooth tracking devices. We have heard no more about, yet the government squander millions on TV and radio advertising to get people to scan the Covid App. This process is clearly not working. Another Kiwi Build case of government failure.

Yeah but..

..the Government can’t be that bothered because they allow people who do not even live here (Fiji cases for example), to come from overseas with the virus, and transit through Auckland, before going home. Why on earth are we doing this? They’re not our citizens. We have no obligation to expose aircrew and airport staff, and the rest of us, just to get them home. The only people coming in should be our citizens, on flights that terminate here. End of. Fiji does have an airline - it should go and pick up its own people. When the Government stops this nonsense I will consider scanning codes.

Experts!

Far too many self proclaimed experts. I even read about one calling for a 5 day quarantine before boarding a flight for NZ. Why would another country do that for our citizens? And moving MIQ out of Auckland. To where exactly? On what planet does this expert think that is practical and achievable? Planet New Zealand. This has been the problem from the start - a heap of experts who live in a lab looking through a microscope. No idea about the real world.

Hahaha, you always give me a good laugh. It's just a common cold virus isn't it? So people coming and going shouldn't be an issue. No worries mate :-)

Cheers. Maybe try reading more carefully. I am against people “coming and going” who don’t actually live here, like the transiting Fijians. And yes, it is a cold virus - “common” according to you, not me. That said, I still maintain many countries have overreacted. The economic impact over the next 20 years will be far worse than slight prolonging the lives of people in nursing homes or those who are unhealthy by lifestyle choice. Covid claimed 2 million in 2020 (though that is disputable). If you look at world deaths through suicide, murder, diabetes, road crashes, wars, terrorism we can see that many millions choose to die, or kill others, every year. Governments accept this, often they are complicit. The whole Covid thing is just a bunch of woke left wing Governments trying to act holier than thou and outdo each other. It’s just BS. :-)

"It's just BS." Until YOU catch it... Try telling that to 300,000 dead Americans and their families. Tell it to the hospital workers who are working 80 hour weeks, at their wit's end, with no more beds available and a serious shortage of PPE. Tell it to the people around the world who can't even say Goodbye to their loved ones and can't find room in the cemeteries to even bury them properly. I wouldn't wish this virus on anyone (not even you, Slim). Have an opinion, by all means; express it if you must, but please, temper it with at least some respect for people who are dying from it. It could be YOUR loved ones one day.
