The Ministry of Health is reporting a "high number of deaths" of people who had Covid-19.

During today's media briefing, Dr Carline McElnay reported that there are 17,148 new community cases today and 34 deaths, including one in the Bay of Plenty.

"There are 842 people in hospital, 26 who are receiving ICU level care."

McElnay says today's additional deaths happened over the last 10 days and brings the seven-day rolling average to 15.

Today's reported deaths also brings the total to 303.

"We have seen an increase today in case numbers across most regions of New Zealand, however it's not unexpected as we generally see lower testing and reporting over weekends.

"Despite today's increase, it's encouraging to see the seven day rolling average of cases decline.

"Today's seven day rolling average is 15,565; this compares with the seven day rolling average of cases as at last Tuesday of 17,020."

Covid-19 deaths

The deaths being reported today include people who have died over the past 10 days but were only recently notified to the Ministry. Delays to reporting can be associated with people dying with, rather than of Covid-19, and Covid being discovered after they have died.

Of the people whose deaths we are reporting today, 2 were from Northland, 17 from the Auckland region, two from Waikato, one from the Bay of Plenty, one from the Lakes DHB, two from Hawke's Bay, five from the Wellington region, three from Canterbury, and one from Southern.

One person was in their 30s, one person was in their 50s, five were in their 60s, nine were in their 70s, seven in their 80s and 11 were in their 90s.

Seventeen were male and 17 were female.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with their whānau and friends at this sad time," says the Ministry.

"Out of respect, we will be making no further comment"

The figures show that just under 3% of people aged 12 and over in the Northern Region have had no doses of the vaccine, while of those aged 12 and over in Northland and Auckland hospitals with COVID-19 for whom we have vaccination status recorded, 14% have had no doses of the vaccine and are more than four times over-represented in our hospitalisation figures.
