Road closures due to multiple slips and flooding

Update, 9.30am: State Highway 2 Waimana Gorge is closed between Station Road, Tanetua and Woodlands Road in Ōpōtiki due to multiple slips. Wainui Road in Ōpōtiki is also closed, which would be the usual detour.

Contractors are working to open Waimana Gorge by midday.

State Highway 35 remains closed between Maraenui and Omaio. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency contractors returned at first light today to continue work to clear slips. The priority this morning is to push slip material to one side to free up one useable lane for traffic. This is likely to take several hours.

Drivers travelling from Gisborne can still use State Highway 2 Waioeka Gorge – but will only be able to travel as far as Ōpōtiki.

SH33 closed

State Highway 33 is closed btrween Okere and Paengaroa due to a road slip that has completedly covered the road.

SH2 closed, Pukehina

Flooding has closed State Highway 2 at Pukehina.

"SH2 is closed at the Kaikokopu Bridge at Pukehina due to a 100m stretch of flooding," says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.

"While the flooding is not deep – NZ Police have requested the closure due to safety."

NZTA say there is no timeframe yet for when SH2 at Pukehina will re-open as the river is extremely high and posing a risk.

Detour for both directions is via read Wilson Road, Old Coach Road and Pukehina Station Road.

Road closure: SH 2 Matata to (SH33) Paengaroa

Due to flooding, SH2 is also closed between Pukehina Station Rd and Wilson Rd South, in both directions.

A detour is in place. Eastbound traffic use Wilson Rd South, Old Coach Rd and Maniatutu Rd. Reverse for Westbound traffic.

"We suggest delaying travel if possible," says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.

"Please take extra care when driving, watch for hazards, adjust your speed and check the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner website before heading off for information on which routes are affected by recent bad weather.

"We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available," says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.

"Waka Kotahi thanks everyone for their patience and understanding while we work to clear the roads."

Earlier, 8am:

Multiple slips, fallen trees and flooding due to the weather on Saturday has resulted in some road closures across the Bay of Plenty.

State Highway 35 between Waihau Bay and Opotiki remains closed due to multiple slips.

"Please continue to detour via SH2 and allow extra time fo your journey,' says a Waka Kotahi NZTA spokesperson.

The detour route is via State Highway 2 Waioeka Gorge.

Waimana Gorge, SH2

State Highway 2 through Waimana Gorge is closed due to multiple slips.

No detour is available and motorists are advised to avoid the area or delay journeys if possible.
