Serious Crash Unit

This accident occurred several hours ago but as I drove past a couple of cops in overalls were sticking little cones or flags on the road. Meanwhile hundreds, if not thousands, of road users sat patiently waiting. Why does it take the Police so long to clear a crash site? What information are they gathering that is so important to cause such a lengthy interruption to traffic flow? Crash victims were long gone. They had heavy tow trucks standing by, police cars parked-up, and everyone waiting because the SCU with the little flags were still doing stuff. Seriously, this happened last week, and will happen again in the future, so why can't they get traffic moving a whole lot quicker?
