New block pavers on Tauranga‘s Cameron Road

New block pavers and bus shelter between 11th and 12th Avenue.

New block pavers are just one of a number of new features appearing on Tauranga's Cameron Road.

With several construction sites along Cameron Road, Tauranga City Council is asking people to "take care driving through construction zones and be kind to the Cameron Road Joint Venture construction team as they go about their work".

"If you need assistance, they are happy to help you find your way through the site."

The new two-way cycleway is taking shape.

Council says this is a significant change for both drivers and cyclists, and we all need to play our part to keep each other safe.

"The cycleway is being constructed in sections and, as progress is made, more sections will open.

"Drivers need to watch out for cyclists. Remember to look both ways when turning to access your favourite shops and give way to cyclists and pedestrians.

"Please pay attention to the temporary traffic management signs in place and adhere to the speed limit."

The team has completed the road resurfacing and installation of cycle separators, green paint and permanent signage for the new cycle lane between Elizabeth Street and Wharf Street.

The stormwater network and footpath upgrade is also taking place between 1st Avenue and 3rd Avenue on the eastern side of Cameron Road. There is a southbound left lane closure in this section.

The 2nd Avenue intersection is open. Access to 3rd Avenue from Cameron Road is closed while a construction team works on the corner island and kerb upgrade in this section. This work is expected to take two weeks and includes overnight works.

Council says the stormwater and footpath upgrade work is underway on the western side of Cameron Road, from 2nd Avenue to 1st Avenue, and will extend to Elizabeth Street in the coming weeks.

"Temporary traffic management will be in place with a northbound left lane closure, with no right turn into Cameron Road from 2nd Avenue, 1st Avenue is left in only.

"A detour is in place from 1st Avenue (west), along Westbay Lane, to 2nd Avenue exiting onto Cameron Road. 2nd Avenue, reduced to one lane, will have temporary traffic lights installed to control traffic flow."

Council says the wastewater upgrade is complete between 3rd Avenue and 6th Avenue.

"The wastewater connections upgrade across Cameron Road from 5th Avenue, Arundel Street and 4th Avenue will be completed in the new year as weekend work.

"Work on the eastern side of Cameron Road between 6th Avenue and 15th Avenue is progressing well.

"The team has completed the finishing touches between 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue on the eastern side of Cameron Road and is preparing to remove temporary traffic management.

"The stormwater and streetscape upgrade on the eastern side of Cameron Road continues between 11th Avenue and 12th Avenue.

"Vehicle traffic is reduced to one lane where work is taking place. The team has also started work on the stormwater and streetscape upgrade between 15th Avenue and 16th Avenue, on the eastern side of Cameron Road. Temporary traffic management includes a southbound left lane closure."

Council says the work zone on the western side of Cameron Road has extended from 11th Avenue to 10th Avenue, as work to upgrade the stormwater system continues.

Between 14th Avenue and 11th Avenue on the western side of Cameron Road, Council says traffic will be reduced to one lane as the team completes the stormwater and streetscape upgrade through this section.

"Work is nearing completion on the mid-block crossing in the centre median outside Tauranga Boys' College (near the 14th Avenue intersection). Temporary traffic management remains in place with a southbound right lane closure.

"The 13th Avenue and Cameron Road intersection (west) is closed as we upgrade the stormwater across the intersection. There is a temporary signalised pedestrian crossing at the mid-block between 14th Avenue and 15th Avenue to allow pedestrians to cross Cameron Road." Intersection work:

  • 12th Avenue: the centre median is permanently closed to through traffic. The southbound right-hand turn is currently open while we work at the Thirteenth Avenue intersection
  • 13th Avenue/ Cameron Road (west) is closed
  • 14th Avenue/Cameron Road (west): is now open.

Please note, above works are weather dependent. If you're coming into the city, make sure you check the current road closures on the Tauranga City Council website, so you can navigate easily through the city centre.

Pretty nonsense window dressing that does nothing at all . Still something to look at when completely stationary waiting for m Some movement. I predict 45 minutes to an hour to go the length of Cameron. Sadly often no choice

“Drivers need to watch out for cyclists”, says the Council expert. Mmm..I think you will find it’s the other way around, no matter who has right of way. I predict the first casualty of the two way cycle way will be within a month. Somebody will turn in without looking, across a cycle way and the cyclist will be hit. The last thing they will be thinking is ‘I have right of way and the Council said drivers should look out for me’. All of which is true, but they’ll still be gone burger if THEY don’t look out for vehicles.
