Adam Wright is taking his Mercedes Benz salvaged from the Rena wreck to Auckland for the weekend before heading south to his home in Christchurch.
Adam bought the silver ex-Rena C200 Mercedes Benz Kompressor saloon at auction on Trade Me with the top winning bid of $13,851.
Adam Wright gets his new Mercedes Benz.
'I think I will have figured that out by the time I get to Auckland,” says Adam.
'I'm catching up with the family in Auckland this weekend, a get together and barbecue. I haven't booked a ferry ticket, haven't booked a flight. I will wing it.”
The car was donated for sale to the Child Cancer Foundation Tauranga by the wrecked containership Rena's owners and insurers.
It has been on display at Safeway Auto Auctions, where Adam picked it up from today.
This is Adam's second Mercedes Benz and he says the 1976, 450 SL convertible is not practical for every day motoring, but will be ideal for summer.
Adam's work car is a Holden SV6, which he says is a nice car.
'This is a nicer car, but I really bought it more for the charity. It sounded like a great idea, a nice way of supporting the charity. I spent nearly $14,000 and I'm getting something for that as well. I think it's a win, win.”
Adam flew into the Mount Maunganui on this morning and had lunch on Mount Beach with the Child Cancer Foundation's BOP fund raiser Delwynne Hahunga before picking up his new wheels.
'We talked about the charity and things like that - the Rena oil. I haven't been here since all that happened.”
Adam manages a MAN and Western Star truck sales and repair business with branches in Christchurch and Palmerston North.
'My father and brother own the Mercedes truck dealership for the North Island, and Western Star trucks are owned by Mercedes Benz.”
Included with the car is a booklet of photos taken from the tug Go Canopus as the car was lifted from the wrecked bow section onto the salvage barge about 25km off the coast of Tauranga.
The Mercedes was found in a container on the bow section of the ship and repaired and prepared for sale by local businesses Mount Maunganui Collision Repairs Ltd with Ingham-Sears, the Bay of Plenty's Mercedes Benz specialists, providing replacement hood and boot badges and grooming it.
Bay Insurance Brokers provided insurance for the CCF while it has been on display at Safeway Auto Auctions.
