Dragon boating season is officially underway, and the Salt Dragons Club is hoping for more aspiring rowers to join the team.
The sport, originating from China, is both “fun and approachable” according to club president and coach Brooke Hargreaves, who invites “all ages and genders” to come along.
In fact the sport is so broad, Brooke says the ages range in the team from about 14 to 80-years-old.
“We have a few seats left for the current season, and are hoping for anyone who wants to compete and is able to commit to 1 – 2 training sessions per week.
“Our club doesn’t take things too seriously, but we are competitive and are heading to the 10up! regatta on November 11, and the nationals in April next year.”

Brooke says beginners are welcome to join the club, and the only requirement is being able to swim, despite taking a dip being a rare event.
“We provide the full training, along with the life jackets and paddles anyone who wants to give it a go will need. So just bring yourself and a bottle of water!”
“People who come along get free paddles with the club too, so even if you don’t end up joining the salt dragon’s team, we can also facilitate the equipment needed to join other teams.”
Last year, the club finished off the season with about 150 members, and according to Brooke, has seen a huge increase in popularity.
“It’s not like netball or basketball which can be a bit rough on your joints. We are in the best place to do it too, because we’ve got the harbor right here. It is also a sport which caters to all ages, all abilities, including para, and can be approachable to people who don’t have a history with fitness.
“There are techniques to the sport, but you are able to learn them as you go.”
People who wish to join the Salt Dragons Club can get in touch through their Facebook page.
