Police have taken a man into custody after a near-five-hour standoff outside a residential home in Tauranga South.

A police spokesperson earlier said that they were called to Devonport Road at around 7am on Friday following reports of a man with a weapon.

“As a precaution, armed police are in attendance and the area has been cordoned off.”

The spokesperson says that police were trying to talk to a man in relation to the incident.

Around midday, police announced that the man had been taken into custody “without further incident”.

For most of the morning, residents of Devonport Road were unable to use their cars to leave their homes.

A Tauranga City Council spokesperson confirmed that Devonport Road had been closed between 11th and 12th Avenues.

She says it had been closed because police were “dealing with a situation”.

A resident of Devonport Road told Stuff she had seen police on the street.

She wasn’t able to drive her car, instead walking down the road to the shops.
