One person is reported to be critically injured following a vehicle crash in the Whakatane area.

Police are responding to a serious single vehicle crash on Galatea Road, Waiohau reported around 2.30pm.

"One person is reported to have critical injuries," says a police spokesperson.

"The road is due to be closed for a scene examination and the Serious crash Unit have been notified."

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and avoid the area.
