Lots of laughs for a great cause

Whakamarama School PTA is pulling out all the stops for its first big fundraising event for its kura.

They’ve secured the popular Christchurch-based comedy duo Ethel and Bethel - a couple of old biddies who thrive on tea and bingo - for a bingo night on Friday, July 5.

“They’re hilarious and we can’t wait to see them,” says PTA treasurer and event organiser Sharlene Reay.

“They run four games of bingo with a chocolate wheel, live auctions, spot prizes and a mystery balloon competition. There’s going to be food and a full bar.”

The PTA is hosting event to raise the$10,000 needed for new dual-purpose goal posts at Whakamarama School.

“The kids are playing rugby and soccer on the field so much and we realised they needed more than the old, galvanised pipe structures that we have,” says Sharlene.

“The PTA was formed in April last year. So far, we’ve run a series of small events like discos and movie nights that were fun for the kids and covered the basics the school needed.

“For this adults’ event, though, we wanted to make sure that everyone has a great night out.”

Ethel and Bethel are excited to host the fundraiser for the school.

“Be sure to pack a spare pair of knickers and your funny bones loves, we can’t wait to come see you in the Bay,” says comedian Ethel Eunice.

Several businesses have donated generously, and Sharlene is hoping the wider community throws its support behind the event by purchasing tickets to the fundraiser evening.

The Ethel & Bethel Bingo Fundraiser is at Whakamarama Community Centre, 469 Whakamarama Rd, on Friday, July 5 from 7.30pm-11pm.

Tickets cost $50 each or $360 for a table of eight at Humanitix.
