Cold winds and heavy frosts are making for some uncomfortable golfing at the Waihi Golf Club, writes club member Rodger Bagshaw.

In the VETS section this week, the competitions were split in two, as the ladies were playing to find our representatives to play in the Dorothy McNicol Trophy.

Thus, the Ladies played an individual stableford round, while the men contested a par competition playing off the forward tees.

In the Ladies round, Susan Mustard was the winner with 37 points, with Sarah Tomsett, Avon Gordon, and Mavis Bruce all next with 36 points.

In the men’s par round, John Giffney was the bolter off the yellow tees with +5, next were Norm Sanderson and Francis Gascoigne with +3. Nigel Sanderson was on +2, and Des Crene +1.

Andrew McLennan and Alex Standfield were both square with the card.

NINE HOLE SECTION:

This week a nett medal haggle was held, and Margaret Hickey prevailed with a nett 32.

Liz Wylie and Tukatara Tangiia were next with nett 33’s, followed by Jenni Mora and Alison Williams with 34, then Rex Smith on 37.

WEDNESDAY LADIES:

A good field of ladies contested a stableford haggle this week, with Kristine Gascoigne returning a winning score of 40 points.

Second was Sarah Tomsett with 37, then back to Jill Morrison with 35, followed by Avon Gordon on 33. Edna Connolly, Adele Gunning, and Helen Baynes all finished with 32 points.

Helen Baynes took out the hidden hole with 7 points.

THURSDAY MEN:

A heavy frost delayed the usual start time for the morning haggle, but John Saunders thrived in the conditions to post 40 stableford points.

Second was Brian Baynes (improving markedly since his last round) with 36 points, then Mr regular, Francis Gascoigne with 35. Stephen Bailey, Norm Sanderson, and Des Crene all had 34 points.

A very large field contested the Afternoon Haggle in great conditions. Russell Dewey was the top player with 40 points, two ahead of Graeme Culton and Peter Spiers on 38.

Craig Sandlant had 37 points, while Andy Roche, Peter Dagg, Mark Hope, and Mark (Sparky) Bryant all had 36 points.

SATURDAY LADIES:

The stableford haggle was a triumph for Susan Mustard with 36 points, ahead of Karen Roche with 35.

Then it was back to Cathrine Blake with 33, and on 32 were Carol Leary, Sharon Deacon, and Kaylene Croker. Most unusual was that the hidden hole was shared amongst 50 per cent of the field!

SATURDAY MEN:

The second round of three for the Club Par Cup was played, and the current leaders are Eddie Bruce, David Campbell, and Wayne Brierley, all on -2, with 5 others on -3

The Morning Par Haggle resulted in:

Div One, Rhys Peden winning with +2, ahead of Ken Mustard, +1, and Eddie Evans, Ross Coleman, and Will Surplis, all on -1.

Div Two, Eddie Bruce prevailed with +1, with Rodger Bagshaw, and Stephen Bailey on 0. Greg Bundle, Tim Parish, Peter Hewitt all had -1.

The Afternoon Haggle saw Chris Pilmer the only player on the plus side with +1, while John Taylor and Rob Hope were on zero.

David Campbell, Alister Cochrane, and Terry Gerbich were all -1, with Chris Spiers, Mark Bryant, and Logan Phillips all finished on -2.
